King Lune of Archenland.
We Narnia fans don't really talk much about King Lune, but consider what is actually happening in this moment. He's a widower in his forties who's gone a bit to seed. Yesterday he learned from a boy in the forest that his castle will soon be under siege from a foreign prince. He has no context for the attack or any news of the safety of King Edmund's party, which he likely knew was visiting Calormen with his younger son Corin in attendance, as Corin has been fostering at Cair Paravel. He doesn't know where Corin is or that he escaped Tashbaan. He is already certain that the boy who brought him warning is his eldest son Cor, lost these fourteen years, and when Lune's party arrives at Castle Anvard, Cor is missing AGAIN. Lune makes the heart-wrenching decision to order the gates closed against the attackers with his child still outside. Morning comes and Rabadash has gone at the gates with a battering ram. Lune doesn't know whether either of his sons are safe or that the Narnians are about to crest the hill to come to his aid. He's no longer the fit man he likely was in his youth, but he is still a king and a warrior and leads the charge from the gate himself. Bravo to one of the unsung heroes of the Chronicles.
